Using the Eastern English Channel dataset, this pilot study will develop a representative regional set of biotopes or regional variants of existing biotopes, and produce a methodology for future studies of this type in other areas. This is important to the aggregate industry as more appropriate mapping results in more informed management and monitoring.

To facilitate the biotope mapping process for stakeholders, the project also aims to develop a web-accessible interface for determining biotopes from survey data. This will facilitate efficient, consistent and therefore more comparable biotope mapping by allowing the simultaneous analysis of entire survey datasets - particularly important for Regional Environmental Characterisation / Assessment studies.
