Development of Hierarchical Classification Scheme to determine an optimal classification and validation process for the supervised classification of AGDS data

This is an extension of work funded by ALSF via Natural England
in FY2006/07
The hierarchical classification scheme will be based on a
multivariate statistical analysis of the camera survey data,
However in addition to the species / substrate data, we shall
experiment with the incorporation of additional quantitative
measures (e.g. AGDS variables) and qualitative measures (e.g.
habitat importance) and variations in the descriptive resolution of
classes to investigate the impact on the accuracy and usefulness of
map outputs. The process is a key stage in the development SFC
District high resolution inshore seabed maps for resource
management needs and spatial planning requirements.
The project will work closely with Sussex Seasearch in the
development of appropriate methodologies for volunteer divers to
use to collect positionally accurate and valid data. We also
propose to use local fisher's vessels in addition to the
committee's patrol vessel for the ground validation survey in a bid
to incorporate local knowledge and build greater stakeholder
participation in the research.
